Discussion Starters

Books are very useful devices for conveying ideas and information, but they are very limited in their ability to share real experiences, to develop a consensus of understanding and to build a collective commitment to do something practical.
In practice this is much better achieved through discussion.
Sadly, it is often the case that much of the really important discussion and reconciliation takes place in response to decisions and action, rather than the other way round. It often seems that only current problems and real risk can validate this sort of investment in shared learning.
Appendix 4 of 'Managing by Design' attempts to address this by providing a number of discussion starters. (Tips for using discussion starters)
To help managers in using these discussion starters, we have included the questions on this website as MS Word (TM) files. This will provide the manager with the facility to download, edit and circulate the questions in a form most suitable to the organisation's needs. The discussion starter for each section of the book can be downloaded by clicking on the links below
Word file for section: A - B - C - D - E
The purpose of the discussion questions is to provide a mechanism whereby, within forward thinking teams, investment in learning and reconciliation can take place around the topic of systematic management, based on the ideas put forward in the book. The intention of these discussions is to stimulate forethought, and thereby avoid problems rather than merely respond to them.
